A group of Arenaviridae that cause severe haemorrhagic disease in humans and have been isolated from bats in South America. There are three lineages: A (Flexal, Parana, Pichinde, and Tamiami viruses), B (Amapari, Guanarito, Junin, Machupo, Sabia, and Tacaribe viruses) and C (Latino and Oliveros viruses). Most of the B lineage are highly pathogenic.
