A black volcanic glass formed by the chilling of basaltic magma. The black colour is due to the presence of numerous microscopic crystals within the glass. Tachylite can be found in the chilled rind of pillow lavas, but is extremely susceptible to alteration by sea water and may be converted to palagonite.
