Quick Reference

(b London, 7 Oct. 1950)

British dancer and ballet mistress. She studied at the Royal Ballet School, graduating in 1968 into the Royal's touring company. She was promoted to principal in 1974 and remained with the company, then called Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet, later Birmingham Royal Ballet, until she retired from the stage in 1995. She created roles in Christopher Bruce's Unfamiliar Playground (1974), J. Carter's Shukumei (1975), D. Morse's Pandora (1976), Bintley's Meadow of Proverbs (1979), Punch and the Street Party (1979) and Night Moves (1981), MacMillan's Playground (1979), and Corder's Day into Night (1980). An intensely dramatic dancer, who nonetheless had a flair for comedy, she was outstanding in the MacMillan and Tudor repertories. After retiring from the stage she became ballet mistress of Birmingham Royal Ballet and continued to perform occasional character roles with the company.
