A genus of trees and shrubs, like Magnolia except that the fruiting carpels form a woody or cartilaginous mass, separate from the axis, and indehiscent (i.e. the upper portion of the carpels break-ing away). There are 50 species, occurring in tropical and subtropical Asia and America.
