Iranian cleric and a key ideologue of the Islamic revolution. Advocated pursuit of social justice as a religious vocation. Collaborated with Mehdi Bazargan in formulating an ideological alternative to Communism, repression, and traditional religion, resulting in foundation of the Liberation Movement of Iran in 1961. Prominent public activist. Elected to the Assembly of Experts in 1979 with the highest number of votes, but died prior to the passing of the final constitution.
