(b Kroměříž, Moravia, 1883; d Beroun, 1961). Cz. conductor and violinist. Leader, Berlin PO 1903–4. Taught vn. in Tiflis 1905–7. Cond. Ljubljana PO 1908, then opera at Plzeň (Pilsen) 1912–15. Chief cond., Cz. PO 1919–31, 1933–41, during which the orch. became world-famous through tours and records. Cond., Stockholm PO 1931–3. Re-orch. substantial parts of Janáček's operas, Káťa Kabanová and The Cunning Little Vixen. Art. dir. and cond. Prague Nat. Opera 1935–44; dismissed 1945, restored to post 1947, again removed by Communist régime 1948 and restored 1954. Founded Slovak PO of Bratislava 1949–52. Guest cond. Cz. PO 1952–4. Retired 1956. Taught cond. in Prague and Bratislava.
