(Mozart: Die Zauberflöte). Ten. An Egyptian Prince. Rescued from a snake by the Three Ladies, they show him a picture of Pamina, daughter of the Queen of Night, and he falls in love with her image. The Queen promises he can marry her if he rescues her from the ‘evil’ Sarastro. Aided (and at times hindered!) by the bird—catcher Papageno, he sets out to find her. Sarastro realizes they are in love but insists Tamino undergo severe trials to prove his worthiness. This he does and Sarastro gives them his blessing. Aria: Dies Bildnis its bezaubernd schön (‘This picture is enchantingly beautiful’). Created (1791) by Benedikt Schack (whose wife created the Third Lady).
