As its name suggests, the tangelo is a hybrid between the tangerine and the pomelo (a citrus fruit resembling the grapefruit). It was developed in the USA in the early years of the twentieth century; the 1904 edition of the US Department of Agriculture Yearbook bears witness to its naming: ‘The term “tangelo” is suggested by the writers [Messrs Webber and Swingle] as a name for this group of loose-skinned fruits, which lie midway between the pomelo and the tangerine.’
