Known as Amir Kabir. Reformer and chief minister of Qajar court in Iran, 1848–51. Visited the Ottoman Empire, studying the Tanzimat reforms. Instituted reforms in finance, administration, and education. Closely associated with Dar al-Fanun, a new college for training administrators and introducing modern subjects. Murdered while in exile in Kashan.
