Quick Reference

Taramasalata in modern Greek means literally ‘salad of preserved roe’ (Greek taramas was borrowed from Turkish tarama, ‘soft roe’). It is a Greek hors d'oeuvre or mezze dish consisting of fish roe (traditionally from the grey mullet) mixed into a pinkish paste with breadcrumbs, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and egg yolk. An alternative spelling is taramosalata.
