Patr. of Constantinople from 784. He sought to restore good relations with the W. Church and persuaded the Empress Irene to convoke a General Council in concert with Pope Hadrian I; it met at Nicaea in 787 under his presidency. He was attacked for laxity by Theodore of Studios. Feast day, 25 Feb.
