Hung. single‐reed, conical‐bore woodwind instr. similar to sax., with cl. mouth‐piece, which is sometimes used for 2nd of the shepherd's tunes in Act 3 of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Wagner specifies a Holztrompete (wooden tpt.), but while at Budapest Opera (1888–91) Mahler used the tarógató and this was also adopted at Bayreuth by Richter. Orig. tarógató was a wooden cornett, sounding only natural notes, used for military signals.
