Quick Reference

(1854–1919). Japanese architect. He was one of the first to study architecture abroad (e.g. in the office of Burges in London). Influenced by Norman Shaw, he often used red brick with white stone dressings. Among his best works are various buildings for the Bank of Japan (Tokyo (1903), Kyoto (1906), and Osaka (1911)) and Tokyo Central Station (1914—partly destroyed).
