A fundamental category, or real (i.e. ontologically real) constituent, of existence, usually arranged in a hierarchy of other tattvas. The paradigmatic instance is the hierarchy of 25 tattvas enumerated in classical Sāṃkhya texts. Tattvajñāna—‘knowledge of the principles’—is in some respects equivalent to the Western term ‘philosophy’.
