Quick Reference

A protein (352 aa with multiple isoforms) that copurifies with tubulin and coassembles into microtubules. It has tandem repeats of a tubulin binding domain. Tau isoforms are found in all cells and are highly expressed in neurons where they associate with axonal microtubules. See MAPs; tauopathy. Tau tubulin kinase (1244 aa) is a casein kinase type enzyme that will phosphorylate both tau and tubulin. Mutations are associated with spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA11).
