Transposable elements that are 1,300–2,400 bp in length and contain a single gene that encodes a transposase (q.v.). The DNA segment is characterized by terminal inverted repeats. The transposon family is named after its two best-studied members, the Tc1 transposon of Caenorhabditis elegans and the mariner transposon of Drosophila mauritiana.
