Most religious, moral, and cultural education in Israel took place in the home, or in synagogues when they had been established; but for a few there may have been schools. Preparation for civil servants was provided by scribes attached to the royal court. Jesus taught by word of mouth (John 3: 2), as did Paul (Acts 18: 4–7). Teaching is mentioned as one of the variety of gifts in the Church (1 Cor. 12: 28).
