Welsh tenor. In 1960 appointed lay vicar, St Paul's Cath., and worked with Ambrosian Singers. International chair of vocal studies, RAM, from 1986. Opera début with EOG 1963 (Quint in The Turn of the Screw) and was member of Group 1964–70. CG début 1970. Created Dov in The Knot Garden, CG 1970. Has sung with Scottish Opera in Verdi and Mozart. Sang The Painter in f.p. of complete Lulu, Paris 1979. Salzburg Fest. début 1985; GTO 1989; Glyndebourne 1992. Took up conducting. Autobiography Tear Here (1990). CBE 1984.
