Secretly listening to telephone conversations by interfering with the line. It is illegal except when authorized by the Home Secretary. In England telecommunications interception evidence is normally inadmissible at trial (although the government has recently indicated that it may seek to change the law in this respect). Foreign interception evidence may be admissible at trial, as may evidence of intercepted telephone calls made from a prison. See also electronic surveillance.
