Eng.‐born musicologist, composer, and pianist (Amer. cit. 1977). Ass. lect. in mus., Cambridge Univ. 1961–6. Ass. prof., Yale Univ. 1966–7; assoc. prof. Univ. of Illinois 1967 (prof. and chairman of musicology dept. 1972–5). Has written organ pieces. Ed. of Pinto's pf. sonatas. Author of The Music of the English Parish Church (1979, 2 vols.). Ed. Loder's opera Raymond and Agnes (prod. Cambridge 1966) and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique (new Berlioz edn., xvii, Kassel 1972, a collation of 14 versions). His realization of The Beggar's Opera perf. Illinois 1986. Completed and orch. one act of Mozart's L'oca del Cairo, prod. Illinois 1991.
