inflammation of a tendon. It occurs most commonly after excessive overuse but is sometimes due to bacterial infection (e.g. gonorrhoea) or a generalized rheumatic disease (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis). See also jumper's knee, tennis elbow. Compare tenosynovitis.
