Chicago radio and television interviewer, whose books are Giants of Jazz (1957), brief biographies of 12 musicians; Division Street: America (1966), transcriptions of his conversations with 70 very diverse persons of the Chicago area presenting a cross section of people and their concerns; Hard Times (1970), comparable conversations to create “an Oral History of the Great Depression”; Working (1974), further interviews; Talking to Myself (1977), “a memoir of my times”; American Dreams: Lost and Found (1980), interviews with plain people, which tell their autobiographies; and The Good War (1984), using the same techniques to document World War II. He also wrote a play, Amazing Grace (1959).
