Quick Reference

To end formally a student's enrolment on a course at college or university, either because they have not completed the required work, or because they have failed to reach the required standard. At many colleges of further or higher education, student work which fails to meet the necessary criteria will be ‘referred’ back to the student for a second attempt, although in such cases it is normal to award no more than the minimum pass mark if the student's resubmission is successful. The student may be ‘failed and terminated’ if their work still fails to meet the grade. Despite its associations, termination in this context is not so quite so sinister a matter as the word might suggest.
