Sequences of nucleotides found at each end of a transposon (q.v.), but in reverse order. Each transposon family is defined by the fact that its members share the same TIRs. In maize, Ac and Ds have the same 11 bp TIR; whereas the Suppressor-mutator (Spm) transposable element has a 13 bp TIR. A Spm transposase does not recognize an Ac TIR and vice versa.
