Quick Reference

The coastal waters together with the sea bed beneath them and the air space above them, over which a state claims sovereignty. Most countries claim twelve nautical miles. In 1983, the Law of the Sea Convention proposed a 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone, but most nations are less than 400 nautical miles apart, so a median line is drawn between the baselines of the states concerned.
