A rare condition in which a person has testes, is genetically male (having XY chromosomes), but has female organs. Those with the syndrome lack the protein, coded for by a gene on the Y-chromosome, which prevents the development of female organs. The condition causes difficulties of sex determination. The person is by virtually all definitions female, but by having a Y-chromosome, could be defined as a male.
