Quick Reference

The process of assessing and measuring a learner's attainment in a task, a lesson, a subject, or a programme of study. In schools it is a term most commonly associated with the national testing which takes place at the end of each key stage. The trend towards extensive national testing, while applauded by some educators as contributing to a raising of achievement, is viewed less favourably by others who consider it imposes a pressure on pupils and teachers alike, which is detrimental to the learning process and the purposes of education.
