Broad-spectrum antibiotics effective against a wide range of common pathogenic bacteria, synthetically manufactured to resemble naturally occurring compounds produced by certain fungi and molds. Unfortunately, many bacteria have developed resistance, aggravated by widespread use of this family of antibiotics in animal husbandry as growth promoters.
