Quick Reference

One of the public fast days, falling on the tenth day of the month of Tevet. This fast is in commemoration of the day on which the siege of Jerusalem by the armies of Nebuchadnezzar began (1 Kings 25: 1), an event which led to the destruction of the Temple in 586 bce. Like the other minor fasts, this one lasts only from dawn to dusk and does not begin on the previous night like Tisha Be-av (see AV, NINTH OF) and Yom Kippur.
