Quick Reference

In media, film, and cultural studies, the academic study of texts in any medium, using methods such as structuralist semiotic analysis, content analysis, or discourse analysis. Purely formalist research focusing on the text as a source of meaning is often criticized for neglecting reception factors, on the basis that meaning is ultimately determined by the reader (within the constraints of textual evidence and subject to sustainability within interpretive communities).
