Tunisian nationalist leader and Islamic reformer. Founded the Destour (Constitution) Party in 1920 to lead the demands for independence from the French protectorate. Exiled by France for fourteen years. Unable to revive the Destour Party after his return to Tunisia, Thaalibi retreated from politics. Influenced by the reformist ideas of the Salafi movement, he stressed the Arabo-Islamic identity of Tunisia. Advocated a constitutional government, the modernization of the judicial system, the development of social services, and the redirection of the economy.
