A nobleman of Anglo‐Saxon England. Their status, as determined by their wergild, was usually 1200 shillings. In return for their services to the crown they received gifts of land, which became hereditary. The king's thanes, members of the royal household, were required to do military service, attend the witan, and assist in government.
