(1676–1740),

only recognized modern saint of Corsica. In the 16th century, the church in Corsica had been beset by corruption, vendettas, and violence. Alexander Sauli had improved matters.

Theophilus was born of noble parents, and from an early age was conspicuous for his devotion to the Passion of Christ and the Blessed Virgin, as well as outstanding care for the poor. He entered the Franciscan order, and was located at Subiaco. His reputation as a preacher as well as a healer grew, and he subsequently set up houses in Corsica and Tuscany. Worn out by his labours, he died on 17 June 1740. Feast: 19 May.
