An index relating the clinical effectiveness of a drug to its safety factor, introduced by the German bacteriologist and immunologist Paul Ehrlich (1854–1915), given by dividing the median lethal dosage (LD-50) by its median effective dosage (ED-50), whence therapeutic ratio = LD-50/ED-50, a drug often being considered safe only if its therapeutic ratio is at least 10.
