A small family of marine and freshwater fish that have elongate to oblong, compressed bodies, spiny and soft-rayed parts of the dorsal fin separated by a distinct notch, a slightly forked tail fin, and the pelvic fins inserted behind the bases of the pectoral fins. Possibly 14 species are found in the freshwater systems of Australia. There are about 17 species in the Indo-Pacific region.
