Literally ‘verses of the elder nuns’. The ninth book of the Khuddaka Nikāya of the Sūtra Piṭaka of the Pāli Canon. It consists of a collection of verses, most of which are believed to have been composed by elder nuns. Most of the verses are accounts of religious experiences and some are of a high poetic standard. Others contain accounts of the life histories of the elder nuns. It corresponds to the Theragāthā, a collection of verses compiled by elder monks. The commentary to the Therīgāthā, compiled by Dhammapāla around the 6th century, is part of the Paramatthadīpanī.
