A pass in Greece, about 200 km (120 miles) north‐west of Athens, originally narrow but now much widened by the recession of the sea. It was the scene of the heroic defence (480 bc) against the Persian army of Xerxes by 6000 Greeks including 300 Spartans under their commander Leonidas.
