(1866–1950), English architect and garden designer, co-author with Sir Reginald Blomfield of The English Formal Garden (1892). He made an extended visit to Italy in 1893 by which he was very strongly influenced. He designed outstanding architectural gardens at Athelhampton, Barrow Court (near Bristol), Chantmarle (Dorset), Rotherfield Hall (East Sussex), and, possibly, Parnham (Dorset). He remains a somewhat shadowy figure but for many lovers of gardens his masterpieces at Athelhampton and Chantmarle remain among the most exquisite English gardens of their time.
