An English company which pioneered the travel industry. Its eponymous founder (1808–92) was an English Baptist minister whose organized excursions for temperance campaigners developed into national operations, to Britain's Great Exhibition of 1851 and then to exhibitions across Europe and beyond. Innovations included the packaging of the travel experience, the issue of hotel coupons, and in 1874 the introduction of ‘circular notes’, forms of the travellers' cheques later issued by American Express.
