British athlete, whose performances in the decathlon in the 1980s established him as one of the most successful all-round athletes ever.
Born in Notting Hill, London, he competed in his first decathlon event in 1975, in the Welsh Open Championship. Two years later he won the European Junior Decathlon Championship and, in 1978, went on to gain the Commonwealth Decathlon title and a silver medal in the European competition. He repeated his Commonwealth victory in 1982 and 1986 and won the gold medal in the European event in the same years. His other successes included gold medals in the Olympic games in 1980 and 1984; until 1987 he had an unbeaten record. His performance in the decathlon at the Olympics in 1984, in which he scored 8847 points, set a new world record. He was also world decathlon champion in 1983. Daley Thompson retired in 1992.
