US computer scientist. Thompson graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in electrical engineering and computer science. While working at the Bell Telephone Laboratories, in 1969 he and Dennis Ritchie played a leading role in the creation of the UNIX operating system. Thompson retired from Bell Laboratories in 2000 and from 2006 worked for Google.
