Quick Reference

Born in Jamaica, Thompson’s career was in the British Museum (seebritish library), where he eventually became principal librarian (renamed director) in 1888. He was a prolific editor, particularly of medieval texts and published important accounts of Shakespeare's handwriting; however, his monumental accomplishment, which began as an article for the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, was An Introduction to Greek and Latin Palaeography (1912).
