thousand island dressing

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Thousand island dressing is a pink mayonnaise-based salad dressing flavoured with tomatoes, chilli, green peppers, etc. The earliest known reference to it is in an advertisement in a 1916 issue of the Daily Colonist of British Columbia, which offers bottles of ‘Mrs Porter's Thousand Island Salad Dressing’ at 35 cents each. The name presumably comes from the Thousand Islands, a group of over 1800 small islands in the St Lawrence river, between the USA and Canada.
