Quick Reference

Compounds produced from prostaglandin cyclic endoperoxides (which are produced by cyclo-oxygenase acting on arachidonic acid) by thromboxane synthase. Thromboxane A2 (TxA2) is vasoconstrictive, stimulates the aggregation of platelets, the release of granule contents, and the production of more TxA2. Another product of endoperoxide metabolism, prostacyclin, has the opposite effects to the thromboxanes. Thromboxane receptors are G-protein-coupled.
