Quick Reference

To sew short lengths of rope yarn by their bights to a sail or piece of canvas for use as a collision mat. Smaller thrummed mats were sometimes used in the standing rigging of the larger sailing vessels to prevent chafe in those places where sails or parts of the running rigging may come in contact with it.
