Quick Reference

Another name for an overhand knot, which is no more than laying the end of a rope over its own part and bringing the end under and through the loop thus made. It is sometimes used in place of a figure of eight knot to prevent the end of a rope or fall unreeving through a block, but most seamen advise against its use because it can jam.
