Quick Reference

An enzyme (TK, EC, 234 aa) in the pyrimidine salvage pathway that phosphorylates thymidine (thymine deoxyriboside) to the nucleotide thymidylate. Cells that do not have TK are resistant to bromodeoxyuridine, because they do not incorporate it into DNA. They are also unable to grow in HAT medium, which is useful for selecting somatic hybrids.
