In Australia, a certificate that could be granted to a convict during the period of convict transportation. It allowed a convict to be excused from compulsory labour, to choose his or her own employer, and to work for wages. There were some restrictions and the ticket‐of‐leave could be withdrawn. It usually was granted for good conduct.
