Is the way people allocate their time between different activities. ‘Necessary time’ is allocated to essential human activities, such as sleeping. ‘Contracted time’ is time spent in paid employment, while ‘committed time’ is time spent on unpaid domestic duties, such as childcare. ‘Discretionary time’ or free time is the time in the day that the individual can spend on what they want, such as leisure activities. For individuals who work long hours, there may be a time squeeze, with contracted time eliminating scope for committed and discretionary time. Work-life balance occurs when the different aspects of time allocation are all adequately catered for.
