Quick Reference

(d. 477),

Patr. of Alexandria. He became patriarch in 457, but because of his Monophysite views he was unacceptable to the majority of the bishops and was banished by the Emp. Leo I in 460. In exile he wrote much to propagate Monophysitism, but also anathematized Eutyches because, unlike Eutyches, he held that the human nature of Christ was of the same substance as that of other human beings. He was recalled to Alexandria by the Emp. Basiliscus in 475 and died before another decree of banishment by the Emp. Zeno could be carried out. Feast day in the Coptic Church, 31 July.

Subjects: Christianity.
